Years at GCU: I have been with GCU full time for 7 years

Academic degrees:

  • B.A. in Biology and Chemistry, Gustavus Adolphus College
  • MDiv in Biblical Languages & Pastoral Ministry, Evangel University (AGTS)
  • M.A. in Biblical Literature, Evangel University (AGTS)
  • DMin in Church Leadership, Bethel Seminary
  • Post-Graduate study in the New Testament through the University of Wales

What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important?

I have given a series of academic presentations on how the quoted Greek in Matthew's Gospel indicates how and when he wrote it. It is easy to see that Matthew, Mark and Luke have similar material. How they are related is debated among scholars. Looking at the Greek of Matthew's quotations helps to unravel the mystery and provides us with greater historical context in the study of the Gospels. I also am very thankful for the opportunity to have been a pastor for 20 years and to have helped many students through the years.

What are you most passionate about in your field and why?

I have found that Christian theology is a means to deepen life, reveal meaning and enter into a life-changing relationship with Christ. With such a rewarding goal, I very much enjoy clearing up misunderstandings, explaining complex concepts in ways that are easy to understand and helping others come to a clearer understanding of what it means to follow Christ.

What is a memorable moment you had in class, and what does that reveal about your teaching style?

I have had a number of students tell me that they have used material they have learned in class for continuing conversations with their families or neighbors. It has been a great joy to learn that a weekly study spontaneously formed when a student explained what they have learned in class. Making the complex easy to understand and easy to communicate is important to help students grasp concepts and for them to use the information in their own lives.

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?

I enjoy do-it-yourself projects such as car repair and home renovation. I enjoy real estate so much that it led me to become a real estate broker.

What is something interesting about you that most people don't know?

Some early experiences that have become foundational for me include growing up on a farm in southern Minnesota, starting a business while in college and doing research using an electron microscope. My wife and I are both lifelong learners and have four remarkable sons.
