Dr. Christian Wilder

Title: Online Full Time Faculty

Years at GCU: 1 year (full time), 3 years (adjunct + full time)

Academic degrees: Ph.D. Biblical Studies (Old Testament). DMin Evangelism and Church Growth

Faculty scholarship (publications, scholarly presentations, fellowships, etc.): Scholarship for the 2019 National ETS conference to present a paper on the exodus narrative and possible connections to the Egyptian writing known as the Am-Duat.

Notable research in your field: In my dissertation, I argued for locating the roots of Jewish apocalyptic writing within the culture and history of Second Temple Judaism rather than in external sources.

What are you most passionate about in your field? I am most passionate about allowing the Old Testament to stand on its own rather than becoming an appendage of the New Testament. My passion in this area stems from wanting to understand Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament rather than viewing the Old Testament as a book of references to Jesus.

What aspect of your teaching style is the most distinctive and/or memorable? Teaching online, I have translated all my classroom lectures to video. However, in doing so, I filmed them in various locations of the GCU campus and included interviews to help our online students feel welcomed to the GCU family.

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time? I enjoy reading fiction (even some fanfiction), binge-watching TV series with my wife, and I’m slowly trying to get back into golfing. Also, as a hobby, I build (and overclock) computers.

What is something interesting about you that most people don't know? My mother grew up 1,000 miles north of the Canadian border, and my father grew up close to Williamsburg. Va. As a result, one of my greatest fears is that someday I will start a sentence with “Ya’ll” and end it with “eh?”
