CON Presents Nursing Symposium Oct. 12

The GCU College of Nursing will hold its Nursing Symposium on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at First Southern Baptist Church, next door to the GCU campus.

The event raises awareness among the nursing community of current topics related to health care and nursing practice. The daylong event features sessions on health-care policy and reform, nursing education, application of research and advancing nursing practice.

“Nursing students can expect to be engaged in pivotal conversations with other students at the associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s levels about issues that impact nursing education, research and health-care delivery,” says Maria Quimba, RN, MA and Director of Professional Studies for CONHS. “Students can also expect to share their ideas about ways to improve nursing practice with fellow colleagues, nursing leaders and community members.”

According to Quimba, unique to this symposium is the speaker series that presents an opportunity for students to hear what leaders in nursing education, research, practice and policy are doing to improve health care and educate the public.

“Students will also benefit from the exposure to current issues in nursing and the networking opportunities,” she says. “Students currently enrolled in nursing courses may receive additional, course-related benefit from attending as well. Depending on their program and faculty.”

Guest speakers at the symposium include:

  • Dr. Anne McNamara, Dean of Nursing, Grand Canyon University
  • Dr. Jennifer S. Mensik, Director, Clinical Practices & Research Banner Health, Arizona & Western Regions
  • Dr. Rhonda Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, Cardon Children's Medical Center
  • Dr. Marla Weston, Chief Executive Officer, American Nurses Association

Student RSVP is required by Tuesday, October 5. Please send RSVPs to Darlyn Swint at [email protected] or call 602.639.6165.

The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. and poster presentations given until noon. The guest speakers will present from 1 until 5:30 p.m.

First Southern Baptist Church is located at 3100 W. Camelback Road in Phoenix.

Grand Canyon University is the host of the event; attendance is free to students and the public. GCU submitted the event to the Arizona Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. The Arizona Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
