A record crowd enjoyed a variety of music and performance Wednesday night at the first Grand Canyon University Java Jam event of the fall.
Students sat in 350 chairs on the "circle" in between GCU's colleges of Education and Arts and Sciences, while others viewed performances from the balconies of CAS building. Many stood behind the chairs or in the grass.
As student performers took the stage, the whistles and grunts from flag-football games on the nearby intramural field added to the atmosphere of a busy college campus.
Dutch Bros. served free coffee to a line that extended between the COE building and the field. Students lined up by 8 p.m. and within an hour they had served their maximum number of 700 coffees and Rebel energy drinks.
Anthony Mann, GCU student activities coordinator and former Associated Students of GCU president, said the open-air event is designed so students can come and go as they please.
Mann estimated that more than 800 students attended the event.
“The night went really well," Mann said. "We always expect a really good attendance at the first one.”
