Choir concerts set to debut songs off new album

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

That is exactly what the College of Fine Arts and Production’s Music Department did when the pandemic prevented live performances. Several of the college’s choir groups, including the Canyon Chorale and Critical Mass, recorded an album to have an avenue for their new music.

The Music Department will host choir concerts on Friday and Tuesday evenings.

Now, for the first time, audiences will have the opportunity to hear that music before the album’s release later this spring. The department will host two concerts, both with the same program, at 7 p.m. Friday at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Presbyterian Church, 6947 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley.

The public is invited to attend for free.

Titled “Peace: Prayers for a Wounded World,” the album is a compilation of choral works that speak to the college’s faith and ability to hold onto hope in trying times.

“This was kind of our thought to put this together to provide a little gift of healing, peace, hope and a little reminder that God is in charge and is taking care of us,” said Mark Fearey, Associate Director of Choirs and Faculty Music Director. “I describe it as a little healing for your soul and a little meditation time.

“You can just come, close your eyes and just take it in, and I find it pretty helpful.”

The hope for both the concert and the album is that audiences are drawn to the Bible’s internal message in Matthew 11:28:

Come to me all that are weary, and I will give peace …

Bible Verse

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (Romans 12:4-5)
