Character center summit to feature seven speakers

Younker High School principal Dr. Michael Sivertson talks with faculty from other area school districts during a breakout session at the Canyon Center for Character Education’s Fostering Thriving Schools and Students Summit in July. Sivertson will be one of several speakers at the Jan. 24-25 summit at GCU.

Dr. Lance Forman, associate professor and director of the Educational Leadership Program at Lipscomb University, will join Dr. Kara Chism of Samford University as keynote speakers at the Canyon Center for Character Education Fostering Thriving Schools and Students Summit Series on Jan. 24-25 in Building 71, first floor.

The duo is among seven guest speakers in the third of four summits the CCCE conducts for K-12 educators to highlight character education in schools.

Forman will speak on the following subjects: “The Student Experience: More Than Just a Slogan on the Wall” and “Exploring Virtue-Based Leadership in Ethical Decision Making.” Chism will speak on “Beyond the Classroom: Making a Real-World Impact through Service Learning” and “Ways to Measure What Matters: Assessment Ideas for Growth in Character Education.”

“We will explore how to seamlessly integrate character development into the classroom curriculum and the entire school community while ensuring long-term sustainability,” said Emily Farkas, CCCE program director. “Participants will learn how to embed character education within existing practices, use effective methods for measuring impact and foster staff engagement to support ongoing progress.

The other conference speakers include:

  • Samantha Ness, a GCU alumna and sixth-year social science teacher in the West Valley: “Empowering Educators: The Importance of Teacher Self-Awareness” and “Character Education for Effective Teaching.”
  • Kyle Navarette, headmaster of Glendale Preparatory Academy: “Vision with Balance.”
  • Sarah Woodroof, general education teacher at Vestavia Hills Elementary School West in Alabama, “Teaching from the Heart,” and “Sparking the Fire Within – Fostering Intrinsic Motivation.
