Chapel: Mueller speaks of making sound decisions

Brian Mueller, Grand Canyon University's president and chief operating officer, used his final Chapel message of the spring semester to address students on track to graduate and leave the University.

"A lot of life is about making good decisions and stringing them together," Mueller told his audience in Antelope Gym, encouraging seniors to get started on the right foot in their post-college life.

Only two weeks remain of Chapel, which moved temporarily into the gym after the start of renovation work on GCU Arena. The Arena is expected to reopen on Sept. 8, shortly after the start of the 2014-15 academic year.

Mueller said Jesus' ministry provides abundant examples of making sound decisions rooted in God's plan. When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, and then when He went into the desert to fast and confront Satan, His life "was always about God's will for Him," Mueller said, citing corresponding passages in Matthew 3 and 4.

Satan draws from a number of worldly temptations to sidetrack Christians from their purpose, Mueller said, mentioning physical needs, possessions and power, pride and doubt.

"These are the ways Satan came after Jesus," he said, "and they are the ways he will come after you."

Mueller said a believer's focus must remain on the things of God.

"We have to be willing to say we"re not going to be distracted," he said. "We live in a place (at Grand Canyon) where there's so much opportunity to live out our Christian faith in ways that help and serve.

"If you have faith and do not doubt, there is no limit to what God can do with your life."

Next week's Chapel speaker will be Billy Thrall, director of CityServe and HopeFest in Phoenix. Dean of Students Pastor Tim Griffin will be the speaker at the final Chapel on April 7.
