Things are getting vertical again on campus.

In construction terms, that means the latest project is under way on North Campus, as concrete columns began being poured last week on the new Chaparral Hall.

Chaparral, which will have 502 suite rooms, is located just north of Sedona Hall.

“Chaparral already has the footings in the ground and columns are being poured and all the underground utilities are going in,” said Charlie Sirokman, project director for campus development.

Another new dorm, Saguaro Hall, will be built just north of Chaparral and also house 502 rooms.

Construction on Saguaro will begin after demolition of the six remaining buildings on North Campus – formerly the home of Human Resources and Facilities – begins this week.

Both residence halls are expected to be completed by Aug. 1.

A parking garage planned for the northern edge of campus, just off Missouri Avenue, is being delayed until the need arises for more parking spaces. For now, that area will consist of 218 surface street parking spaces.

The other looming construction project is the renovation of the swap meet building on 27th Avenue. GCU takes possession of that 130,000-square-foot building on Jan. 2 and will begin renovating it into office space.
