As the towering cranes testify, Grand Canyon University has begun one of the most ambitious construction projects in its 61-year history. Over the next year and a half, the campus will be transformed as it opens a new dormitory, a Student Recreation Center, a College of Education classroom building and finally an Event Center. It’s an exciting time in the life of GCU.
Soon, the possibilities at 33rd Avenue and Camelback Road will become limitless. Imagine coming to campus for a sold-out basketball game, concert or theatrical performance in the Event Center. Imagine the 95-acre grounds as a new hub of activity for metropolitan Phoenix, with student amenities that are second to none. Imagine something quite different from what you see today. That vision will become reality very soon.
This summer, the campus will have construction activity in virtually all sectors. The new dorm will be partially completed by the start of fall classes and finished by the end of the calendar year. The Student Recreation Center is expected to be ready for use in October. Work will begin in mid-May on the COE classroom building, and Event Center construction should begin in July. The scheduled opening of the Event Center in the fall of 2011 will be a spectacular occasion unlike any other in the history of GCU.
After students leave for the summer at the end of April, the east side of campus will become virtually inaccessible to vehicle traffic, and this may require you to make alternate parking plans. Our campus development project manager, Bob Machen, and our Communications staff will keep you posted on everything you need to know, through Herd on Campus and Construction Zone. We will post maps, photos and updates so that you can easily follow what’s going on.
