Antelope Intros: Roman Rubio and Marisol Gonzalez

Antelope Intros is a recurring GCU Today feature that introduces some of our new employees to the people around them in a way that is fun and informative. Employees are eligible to be featured in the month following their orientation.

ROMAN RUBIO

Job title: Student services adviser

Job location: Tempe

What attracted you to GCU? Its vision for change and its empowerment of employees and students.

What do you do for fun and where do you find that outlet? I am a desert rat and like to go off-roading with my brother about once a month. I recently organized an event for my hometown, the San Luis (Ariz.) Off Road Expo.

What are you passionate about? Family, sports (mainly baseball), coaching and my kids — Axel, 8, and Andre, 2.

What are your favorite places or events in the Valley that you like to visit? Spring training, Diamondbacks games, boxing or MMA events and concerts.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know: I was born and raised in Mexico and have my own company, Golden Glove Sports Management. I represent many professional athletes in the minor leagues trying to reach their dream — Major League Baseball. One of the athletes I represent is Alfredo Aceves, a member of two teams that won the World Series (New York Yankees in 2009 and Boston Red Sox in 2013).  I am huge Yankees fan and was able to meet some great players, such as Derek Jeter, because of Aceves.

What are you most proud of? Finishing my evening master’s degree while raising a family and opening a sports management company. I greatly enjoy the relationships I’ve built with athletes.

MARISOL GONZALEZ

Job title: Enrollment counselor

Job location: Peoria

What attracted you to GCU? The fact that it was a Christian university, maintaining their values and pride while experiencing great growth. I’m excited to be part of the company. Also, the fact that GCU is willing to invest in its employees’ future by covering their education expenses is amazing.

What do you do for fun and where do you find that outlet? I enjoy pampering myself with pedicures regularly, and I love shopping. My ideal weekend also involves some time on the couch watching the playoffs or Netflix.

What are you passionate about? My family and my church.

What are your favorite places or events in the Valley that you like to visit? I love to go hiking at Thunderbird Park whenever I get the chance. I also like taking my daughter to Wet ‘n’ Wild during the summer to keep her busy.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know: I am the most loving, caring, mushiest person ever. Most people see the “hard” outer core, but I am a big softy inside — and I am a huge crier.

What are you most proud of?  My daughter, Rosalyn. She is super smart and is doing outstanding in school. She is my joy, and I love the way she finds ways to talk about God daily.

Bible Verse

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. (Hebrews 11:13)
