Antelope Intros: Mark Potts

Antelope Intros is a recurring GCU Today feature that introduces some of our new employees to the people around them in a way that is fun and informative. Employees are eligible to be featured in the month following their orientation.

MARK POTTS

Job title: Campus police officer

Job location: Main campus

What attracted you to GCU? I was attracted to the ground-floor opportunity to be part of a new police department and assist in the development of policies and processes that will help shape the future of campus law enforcement at Grand Canyon University.

What do you do for fun and where do you find that outlet? I am a tournament-level bass fisherman and a low-handicap golfer. To be a low-handicap golfer means you are not too far from the best golfers out there. Fewer than 5 percent of all golfers have a low or single-digit handicap. Grand Canyon University Golf Course is a fantastic venue, and I have been playing there since the mid-1980s, long before the recent renovations — which have turned it from a great municipal course into one of the area’s best. I have been fishing all my life but competitively for the last 20 years or so.

What are you passionate about? Making sure the people under my care — my family and the students and staff of GCU — are served to the best of my ability. I want to provide excellent customer service to my clients, earn their respect and help them understand why we are here for them.

What are your favorite places or events in the Valley that you like to visit? I love the area lakes, such as Roosevelt, Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Havasu, and the many golf venues in the Valley.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know: Many years ago, I was a model for Cadillac Motor Cars and drove vehicles in commercials and print advertising viewed around the world. (That was a long time ago.)

What are you most proud of? Being a strong father figure and, I hope, a role model for my family, which includes nine grandchildren.

Bible Verse

Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn Him to death and will turn Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day He will be raised to life!" (Matthew 20:17-19)
