KHAI ROBINSON
Job title: Enrollment counselor, military division

What attracted you to GCU? My daughter’s educational experience here. By far, it was a superb and outstanding one. We had a situation in 2014, and the whole staff went to bat for us and made sure everything was cleared for her start of school. I have never seen a team of individuals go to bat like that for their student. That experience, among plenty of others, drew me to want to become a part of GCU. Having a heart to help others, I knew this would be my last stop of employment. I’m overjoyed and blessed to be part of the team.
What do you do for fun and where do you find that outlet? Sing and write music. Those two combined help me to bless others as well as myself when release is needed. It melts my heart to know that the gift of song can forever change someone’s life. I always say choose your words wisely when writing music.
What are you passionate about? Singing has forever changed my life and the lives of those around me. I have performed in church, at women’s events around the Valley and elsewhere, and at fashion shows in Scottsdale — wherever I can spread the good news of Jesus Christ and what He has done for me through His music that He places in my heart, in my mind, on paper, in the studio and on stage. There’s nothing quite like the way music can speak to someone’s challenges. Passing on my personal experiences and how I made it through has touched so many lives.
What are your favorite places or events in the Valley that you like to visit? I would have to say AMC Esplanade. I love the experience of eating dinner, relaxing and enjoying a movie. This is definitely my favorite pastime.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know: I’m extremely shy. When you’re a musician, people expect for you to be outgoing because you’re on stage so often. However, in the presence of the Holy Spirit it always removes the nerves you may have and your confidence shows through the gift God has given you.
What are you most proud of? My children and my walk with Christ. My kids have seen me endure so much, and yet they never saw me give up even though at times I wanted to. Christ kept my eyes on Him and on them, and I knew that no matter what it took I had to keep going for their sake. I’m the first of eight to graduate from college, and I earned not only a bachelor’s but also a master’s degree while I also was a full-time mother, student and employee. I truly know the sky is the limit to what you can accomplish with God on your side. What a testimony I have to share with others when God releases me to do so.

Job title: Digital marketing specialist

What attracted you to GCU? Its unusual growth. It reminded me of Gonzaga in 1998-99, when I was a junior in high school considering where I wanted to play football, run track and continue my education. GCU reminded me of my own goals and how things just fall into place if you keep moving forward.
What do you do for fun and where do you find that outlet? I get very loud at my Xbox playing “Call of Duty” with my friends across the U.S. The gym tends to be my morning cup of coffee, and anytime I can fly out of the country or go somewhere random for a weekend, such as Rockport, Mass., or my hometown, Dayton, Ohio. Or if my schedule doesn’t allow me to travel, it’s always easy to sleep through a day.
What are you passionate about? University of Michigan football even though I played at Washington State (I was a wide receiver). I believe that Michigan is the best college football program in history. I know that’s debatable, but the statistics back me up. Growing up in Dayton, I went against the grain as I got older and backed Michigan instead of Ohio State. Michigan was appealing because of its engineering, business school and overall character. All of my friends back home are loyal to Ohio State, so it makes for great debates and fun. I also am a big fan of the Cincinnati Bengals.
What are your favorite places or events in the Valley that you like to visit? I’m still working on that, but the Pro Bowl is on the agenda and so is the Super Bowl. I also might get Diamondbacks season tickets.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know: I’m very artistic, love poetry and cry during movies.
What are you most proud of? Being alive and having the opportunity to type this.
