Kayla Rauschert, a Grand Canyon University admissions representative, said that when she walked into the 27th Avenue Fitness Center this week, “I was amazed.”
Her attention was at once drawn to a new piece of equipment, the eight-sided TuffStuff Fitness International Octagon, which allows numerous people to work out at the same time.
The fancy machine, which arrived Friday, is one of the extra options at the updated fitness center. Pono Construction renovated the workout facility over the holiday break.
“I was amazed when I came in today,” said Rauschert, who works off campus. “It’s a great addition.”
The renovation more than doubled the size of the men’s and women’s locker rooms and added space to the fitness center, said Butch Glispie, owner of Pono Construction, the company at the heart of GCU’s explosive physical growth.
Elise Williams, GCU Office of Financial Aid default manager, said that she particularly appreciates the expanded, spiffed-up women’s lockers.
“Before, I would wait for everyone to leave the locker room because it wasn’t big enough,” she said. “It’s really nice.”
Williams said she also enjoys the new octagon. One of its options -- hurling a weighted ball against one of the eight sides -- makes her feel like a little kid.
“It makes me feel energized, playful,” Williams said.
"I love it," Brenda Garcia, an enrollment employee, said of the center's face-lift. "Especially the StairMaster."
The renovated facility isn’t all that’s new. On Jan. 1, GCU launched “Wellness 360,” a multipronged program intended to offer options for leading healthier lifestyles.
“We’re trying to move our wellness program from a ‘feel good’ to a result-oriented wellness program,” said Chuck Howard, GCU Corporate Wellness Administrator. “It also builds your mind and creates a healthy environment.”
