Six Colangelo College of Business students were each awarded $5,000 Risk Insurance Management Society scholarships by the Arizona Central chapter of the organization.
The students – Jack Edlin, Kennedy Herschberger, Ashlyn Janzen, Elijah Lyons, Delaney McGehee and Blake Romero – were recognized Thursday at RIMS’ 50th anniversary holiday party at Culinary Dropout.
The scholarship program is designed to familiarize students, especially for those studying risk management and finance, in the field of risk management and to promote the industry.
The society received 14 candidates and were initially going to award five scholarships. But three deserving candidates displayed merits that were closely matched and resulted in an additional scholarship to be extended, said Branch Muller, RIMS Arizona Central chapter president and vice president of Risk Management and Safety for the Arizona Labor Force.
“We hold our association with Grand Canyon University in high regard and eagerly anticipate prospective collaboration opportunities in the near future,” Muller wrote in an email. “Our objective is to contribute to the advancement and prosperity of GCU's Risk Management program.”
The RIMS scholarship program had been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic. But the scholarship program was prioritized and reinstated this fall.
“GCU partnering with MedPro Group (an insurance company owned by Bershire Hathaway) was what allowed me to connect with this company initially (in the fall of 2022),” wrote Herschberger, a junior finance major. “Because of this connection, I was able to learn about insurance, travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to MedPro headquarters for a weekend, and also find an internship position within the MedPro headquarters in summer 2023.”
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a full-time student majoring in risk management, finance or financial planning.
- Have completed at least 12 college credits.
- Have submitted a reference from a business faculty member. If the applicant was in his or her first year, he or she must possess a reference letter from an unrelated individual with knowledge of the applicant’s character and career aspirations.
- Possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher.
- Attach an unofficial transcript and resume.
- Submit a 300-word essay or two-minute video essay answering the following: Why are you interested in a career in insurance or risk management?
