Through the Tears, a Major Triumph for Online Student From Illinois

Carrie Thouvenot was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis – a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune cells attack the bile ducts of the liver – at about the same time that she decided to take online classes at GCU. She drew inspiration to complete her studies from her 6-year-old daughter, who was adopted from China.

COE Distributes Over 700 Books at Fall Festival

The annual Fall Festival celebration is a time of joy for the College of Education. “It’s always a lot of fun to meet thousands of our neighbors,” said Dean Kimberly LaPrade. “It is our way of giving back a small piece of ourselves to the community.” Each year, the college does a theme around giving away books to the children visiting the campus. Candy may last a few bites, but books last for years. Using GCU Today Digest, a request went out for donations of children’s books.

COE Students Hear a Call to Commitment at Conference

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” The quote by Henry Brooks Adams was the theme of keynote speaker Amanda McAdams at the College of Education’s student conference in GCU Arena on Wednesday morning. The conference, put on in partnership with the Arizona Educational Foundation, was opened with a prayer by Dean of Students Pastor Tim Griffin and an introduction by COE Assistant Dean Carlyn Ludlow, who told the students that teaching has to come from the heart.

Arizona Teacher of the Year Talks to COE Students

For evidence that good teachers make a difference, Exhibit A might be Joy Weiss. Weiss, 35, was recognized as the 2010 Arizona Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Educational Foundation for her work in her first-grade classroom at Balsz Elementary School, near 44th Street and Loop 202 in Phoenix. All of her students are English Language Learners, most of them the children of Hispanic and Somali immigrants.
