Children’s Cancer Run Has Special Meaning for GCU Academic Counselor

Childhood cancer survivor Jessica Louis, 29, works as an academic counselor at GCU’s Peoria Avenue office. She helps students navigate their coursework for the Ken Blanchard College of Business and College of Arts and Sciences. And she plans to attend the Run to Fight Children’s Cancer, which benefits the Children’s Cancer Network, on March 10 on the GCU campus.

Photos by Jak Keyser, Jerry Bauer and Tim Winzeler The Tempe Educators upset the Peoria Pride, 24-23, in last Wednesday night’s interoffice exhibition game at halftime of the men’s basketball game in GCU Arena. Some of our impressions of a surprisingly intense matchup, which began with Peoria applying a full-court pressure defense: ● Best shirts: Tempe. Its players wore black with only the white block letters “TEMPE” on the front, as if they were representing the city itself. Nothing said “bring it” like that. ● Best fans: Peoria. The purple P’s seen throughout the Arena were a terrific way to show support, like something you’d see at an NBA game. ● Best sign: Peoria. “Hey Tempe, Your Game Needs an Education” was clever.

In November, the students’ efforts helped Daniel Valenzuela become the first Latino elected to the Phoenix City Council’s District 5 seat.

Randy Smith, 54, who died unexpectedly three weeks ago, could be heard and seen at the home games of the Antelope women’s basketball team and was a true fan. “Basketball is just a game,” his daughter says, “but to know that he touched people through the game means so much more.”

Peoria Enrollment Counselor Back in the Game After Cancer
