The Phoenix campus of Grand Canyon University took center stage on Friday, March 5, for a town hall with U.S. Senators John McCain of Arizona and Scott Brown of Massachusetts. McCain, the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2008, is seeking re-election in 2010 to a fifth term in the Senate. His representatives approached the university about serving as the site for the event, which attracted a crowd of 1,500 to Antelope Gymnasium for remarks by the two lawmakers on issues such as jobs, health care, federal spending and national defense. Brown, the newly elected senator to the seat of the late Edward M. Kennedy, sought and received McCain’s support in his recent campaign. His upset victory in January made him the first Republican since 1972 to be elected to the Senate from Massachusetts. “It was the election heard around the world,” McCain said of Brown’s triumph. Media outlets such as NBC News, the Boston Globe and the Associated Press dispatched reporters, production people and satellite trucks to cover the event at GCU, along with all four of the major television stations from metropolitan Phoenix. GCU congratulates Mik Milem on his promotion to Dean of Students.  Mik has been with Grand Canyon University for four years and has served as GCU’s University Pastor. In his new role, Mik will oversee the offices of student and spiritual life, bringing his enthusiasm and love for students and GCU to the office.

Almost 300 students and alumni celebrated Homecoming 2010 at the “Duos through the Decades” dance, Friday, January 29, in the Student Union. The costume ball theme inspired many couples to dress up as their favorite duo from decades past, including Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio, Fred and Wilma, and the whole Scooby Doo gang to name a few. The evening began at 7 p.m. with food catered by Sonic Drive-In, and music provided by AZCelebrity.  DJ. Sam Fisher from the Fred Astaire Dance Academy was on hand to teach a few dances as well. As students and alumni danced the night away, they also had the chance to sneak into the Photo Fun Booth for a quick photo session.

GCU Men’s Basketball Knocks Off Conference Leader Dixie State The GCU men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game Saturday night, beating first-place Dixie State University 82-80 in a Pacific West Conference game at Antelope Gymnasium. A Homecoming crowd of nearly 1,000 was on hand to witness GCU’s biggest win of the season. Dixie State was undefeated (6-0) in PacWest play and 12-3 overall entering the game. The Red Storm had won seven in a row for the first time since they made the move to Division II. The Antelopes thrust themselves into the PacWest race. They are 4-3 in conference play. GCU’s next game is against Dixie State on Saturday, February 6, in St. George, Utah. The PacWest champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Division II Championship tournament. Women’s Basketball moves up in PacWest standings with win over Dixie In a battle for second place in the Pacific West Conference, Grand Canyon defeated visiting Dixie State 78-67 at Antelope Gym Saturday. GCU officially launched Homecoming 2010 with the University Pep Rally and Parade, Friday, January 29. Alumni, students and staff met on the Antelope Lawn for a few words from GCU CEO Brian Mueller. The parade featured floats constructed by several GCU departments, including each college on campus. Parade participants included the ROTC Color Guard, Bagpipe Group, Cheer and Dance Teams and GCU Basketball Teams. There were also several floats with theme’s representative of each group’s mission. Student Life featured a float with the theme “Duos through the Decades.” It represented the decades of GCU, as well as advertised that evenings Homecoming dance. College of Nursing displayed a theme of “GCU Nursing: Caring for the World.” GCU nurses have come from and traveled all over the world. The faculty and students who participated represented scrubs and outfits from various countries. The College of Health Sciences theme focused on “Mind, Body and Spirit through the Ages.” The float captured the college’s holistic approach to serving the needs of mankind. The “‘Lopes for Literacy” College of Education float helped promote the college’s focus to promote education and literacy in the community. The landing of a Black Hawk MEDEVAC on the lawn in front of the CONHS building set the pace for GCU’s semiannual ROTC Day on November 20. Our cadets hosted junior cadets from local high schools. More than 35 students from several local high schools visited campus to learn about the college’s ROTC program, available scholarships and career opportunities in military service. According to GCU Recruiting Operations Officer CPT Todd Balash, ROTC Day is an event that highlights the college’s program and provides an opportunity for potential cadets to connect with GCU cadets. “This is a chance for high school students to get to know the life of a cadet, from an actual cadet,” says Balash. “There is a misconception that ROTC consumes a student’s life. Our cadets can share their experiences so others can get a better idea of what will be expected of them.” ROTC Day connects with GCU’s military nursing program. The Black Hawk and HMMWV on display are vehicles they will likely ride in or operate. GCU hosted its annual Health Sciences & Nursing Day on November 6, attracting more than 1,400 Valley high school students to our campus. The event, which GCU has hosted for more than 20 years, is known as one of the University’s most successful activities. Health Sciences & Nursing Day features healthcare-related presentations, interactive activities and demonstrations aimed at providing future college students with timely information about career options in nursing and allied health fields. The event also offers students some first-hand experiences through a variety of activities, including a tour of the always-popular cadaver lab. Another well-attended presentation was “Body of Evidence: Life of a Medical Examiner” presented by Medical Examiner John X. Hu from the Maricopa County Office of Medical Examiner. Acupuncture: An Ancient Remedy for our Modern World, presented by Dr. Patricia Johnson, GCU adjunct faculty member – was standing room only in Howerton Hall.
