Neighborhood Safety Initiative:
GCU entered into a $1 million partnership with
the City of Phoenix to assist the Phoenix Police
Department in its crime suppression efforts
throughout the Canyon Corridor.
Learning Lounge:
GCU has partnered with the Phoenix Union School
District to develop a tutoring and mentoring program
called the GCU Learning Lounge.
Drowning Prevention Program:
GCU has partnered with the Phoenix Fire Department
to ensure that Car 99 (a proactive support to ensure
residential pool fences meet city code requirements)
would not be cut from the city’s budget.
Graffiti Free Zone:
GCU has partnered with the City of Phoenix and
contributed $25,000 and student workers to make
the Canyon Corridor a graffiti-free zone.
Serve the City:
Twice a year, GCU floods the Canyon Corridor with
hundreds of student and employee volunteers
who spruce up the neighborhood through their
outreach efforts.
Canyon Kids:
Every Saturday morning, GCU students go to Little
Canyon Park to play games, do crafts and share
Bible stories with children ages 5-15 that live in
the community.
Colter Commons:
GCU students visit residents of this senior living
complex several times each week to share time with
them playing games, reading stories and assisting
with their local travel needs.
Phoenix Rescue Mission:
Every other Wednesday night, GCU students visit the
Changing Lives Center to lead worship during their
chapel service and run a children’s program.
12 Months of Service:
GCU identifies a different project every month
for employees, students and alumni to provide
assistance to improve the community.
Canyon Cares Christmas and Easter:
Families in the Canyon Corridor are invited onto
campus to receive children’s gifts and food in a fun
and welcoming atmosphere.
Back-to-School Health and Safety Fair:
This event features free backpacks, drawings for
laptops, health screenings and safety training.
ESL Classes:
ESL classes are planned, designed and implemented
especially for our Canyon Corridor each semester.
Canyon Corridor Connection Magazine:
Our magazine is created and produced each
semester with the Canyon Corridor communities
in mind.
Canyon Corridor Connection Newsletter:
This newsletter highlights the Canyon Corridor
communities and shares information to get families
involved and engaged.
Thunder Vision:
Thunder Vision is a fun and engaging experience
where third through eighth graders visit the GCU
campus, learn about college life and gain direction for
preparing to make college a reality in their future.
Habitat for Humanity:
GCU is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to
renovate thousands of homes in the Canyon Corridor
area. GCU employees and students will volunteer their
time to perform the repairs while also raising money
for the project.
Other Community Outreach Efforts:
Lopes for Literacy, disaster relief efforts, back-to
school drives, teacher appreciation, the Run to
Fight Children’s Cancer, GCU Salutes Our Troops,
Backpack/Health Fair, Clothing Drive and the
Salvation Army Turkey Drive.
