Starting today, GCU employees can sign up for the five-week Fitness B-4 The Feast Wellness Challenge, which begins Monday, Oct. 9 and ends Nov. 10. This is a new twist on old Fitness Challenge favorites (remember last spring’s Get Fit on Route 66 Fitness Challenge?) and similarly syncs fitness devices. But it utilizes a new website, Wellable, and adds a bunch of ways to win more than 20 prizes. Sign up as an individual or as a team.

Students in the Honors College recently had the opportunity to visit Vanguard, one of the world’s largest investment companies. During a five-hour “College to Corporate Workshop” at the 500,000-square-foot campus in Scottsdale, students got to network with Vanguard professionals and GCU alumni who have been hired by the company and learned about the company’s internal operations.

How do fictional shows such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “Bones” compare to an actual crime lab? Melissa Beddow, GCU associate professor of forensic science, talked about the “CSI” effect recently at the Arizona Science Center.

Nurse Carma Erickson-Hurt, a GCU online faculty member, recently returned from the Houston area, where she gave more than 200 tetanus shots to those who needed it. But traveling to disaster areas is more than just giving shots, she said. It’s connecting with people.

The event coincided with the opening of the Jerry Colangelo Museum on campus.  

Teachers are always seeking new ways to reach students. The University is getting set to launch the GCU Canyon Inquiry Project, in which teachers and administrators from 10 schools will delve into “inquiry-based learning,” a type of teaching that shuns passive memorization for more active, project-based learning.

“A Night to Honor a Legend,” a dinner to honor Jerry Colangelo on the eve of the opening of his new museum on campus, brought together more than 400 people to celebrate his influence on Grand Canyon University, the Valley and the sports world. “We’ve been incredibly blessed by his presence here,” GCU President Brian Mueller said.

GCU has opened the 2,200-square-foot Jerry Colangelo Museum to honor an outstanding servant leader who cemented himself in Arizona’s sports and business history.

When Jennifer Florez looked up after a rollover accident on Labor Day weekend, the first people she saw were two young women, dressed in GCU nursing scrubs, who her mom, Sandra — a GCU graduate — calls the family’s “angels.” But they don’t know the students’ names, and they want to thank them.
