CANYON CORRIDOR CONNECTION
| 7
C
anyon Corridor Leadership Academy is a 12-session course
focusing on community change. Facilitators Karen Sutherland (St.
Luke’s Health Initiatives) and SamMacias (Rehoboth CDC) led the
course with the goal to equip emerging community leaders with the tools
and skills necessary to envision, organize and lead change efforts in our
local communities.
Over three months, students dedicated 12 Saturday mornings to the
training.
The course discussed and included activities on topics such as
leadership, communication, conflict resolution, planning and mobilizing
campaigns for change.
The husband and wife team of SALT Outreach, Eli and Christine
Steinbrecher, also attended the training. “The academy has really given us
some valuable strategies and skills that we’ve immediately applied to our
non-profit,” they said.
Our next leadership academy session will begin in April. We are currently
taking applications. Enrollment is limited to 30 participants.
For questions or to receive an application, call Sam Macias at
602-249-9759.

Around the World Play
Day (GAIN event)
A
round the World Play Day, also known as the GAIN (Getting
Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) event, is a time of
celebration for the Canyon Corridor community. This year’s
event was coordinated by Carley Barry, of Rehoboth CDC. The event
included a collaborative effort between CCNA community members,
organizations and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation. Mayor
Stanton attended, lending his support and appreciation of the good work
being done in Canyon Corridor. Alhambra High School students showed
a commitment to community through their volunteerism and dance
team presentations! Their favorite teacher, Chris Oglesby, even did a little
Zumba. This year’s Around the World Playday is scheduled for Saturday,
Oct. 11, 2014. Mark your calendar and come celebrate Canyon Corridor,
a thriving, healthy and culturally diverse community.
