Ride On: Three GCU Staffers Take Cycling Seriously

Everyone has their own way of getting away from the daily grind. For a trio of GCU staffers, they hit the road — or sometimes trails — on their bikes. The three are Dr. Brian McGuire, executive director for the Office of Institutional Research; Head Athletic Trainer Geordie Hackett; and Enrollment Counselor Lance Hinderleider. They’re competitive cyclists, and two of the three have major events coming up.

Cheer, Dance Teams Set for 2011-12 Year

GCU’s cheer and dance teams have been chosen for 2011-12, after recent tryouts that drew more than 70 applicants. “We could not be happier with the turnout,” said Emily Stephens, GCU’s cheer coach. “It really shows how much the interest level in our programs is growing.”

Bible Buried in Arena Center Court Ceremony

“This is something that Christians need to be doing more of, not less of,” said the University’s chief executive officer, Brian Mueller, in brief remarks to about 200 people assembled inside the Arena for the short ceremony. At least a few online students, on campus for the week’s convocation and Commencement festivities, were in attendance. “God has blessed us with this building,” Mueller said. “It’s His building. Through the ages, He has wanted His people to remember that He was their God and they were His people. So we’re here to say thank you.”

Only three of the teams — lacrosse, men’s volleyball and men’s tennis — have officially completed their 2011 seasons. Andy Stankiewicz, named Monday as the Antelopes’ new baseball coach, also attended the event.

New Baseball Coach Has Big Plans for Program

A little guy who made the big leagues has been chosen to lead a little program with big ambitions. Andy Stankiewicz, 46, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound utility infielder for four teams in a seven-year career in Major League Baseball, became the fourth head baseball coach in GCU history on Monday and met briefly with the current Antelope squad that afternoon.

Eight Antelope fall and winter sports teams participated Wednesday evening in “Clash of the Titans,” an end-of-the-year event organized by strength and conditioning coach Chuck Howard and his Performance Athletics staff. On the men’s side, the soccer team prevailed against a field that included basketball, wrestling and swimming. On the women’s side, volleyball came in first against the same three sports.

Television sports personality Brad Cesmat served as master of ceremonies, briefly interviewing each coach and a few of the athletes.

Women’s Basketball Team Sets Sights on Africa

Only two weeks removed from the end of the season, the head coach of the Antelope women’s basketball team has plunged headlong into fundraising for a mission trip to Malawi that’s less than six weeks away. Ten players and the team’s three coaches are committed to going, at a cost of $2,100 per person.
