The spectacular renaissance of Grand Canyon University came into sharp focus Thursday with the formal opening of GCU Arena, an iconic, 5,000-seat facility envisioned as a magnet for its surrounding community and all of Arizona. “It’s been a fun ride,” said Bob Machen, the University’s senior vice president for campus development, standing on the spot where ground was broken barely 14 months earlier. “I’ve enjoyed it, and I love what we’ve done here.”

‘Super Flushers’ Take the Plunge at GCU Arena

August 23, 2011 / by / 0 Comment

It didn’t have quite the drama of a Cape Canaveral space launch, but Monday afternoon’s “super flush” of GCU Arena’s toilets and urinals qualified as a happening nonetheless. Superintendent Neil Baker of Perini Building Co., the Arena’s contractor, counted down via the building’s public-address system, and a simultaneous flush was conducted to ensure that the plumbing was in working order.

A Year Later, It’s an Arena (But It’s Still Hot Outside)

June 24, 2011 / by / 0 Comment

One year ago Saturday, more than 300 GCU employees and guests assembled on a grassy plot on the southeastern corner of campus, the site where a new Event Center would be built. The groundbreaking took place on a sweltering, 92-degree morning, with a large tent providing only temporary relief. May 27, 2011 / by / 0 Comment

You just never know where Dr. James Beggs of GCU’s College of Arts and Sciences will turn up. Could be YouTube, sporting a sideways baseball cap and spouting his latest original rap tune. Could be atop a cherry picker, snapping bird’s-eye photos of the Arena construction. Could be behind the wheel of a backhoe, as it was on Thursday.

Bible Buried in Arena Center Court Ceremony

May 05, 2011 / by / 2 Comments

“This is something that Christians need to be doing more of, not less of,” said the University’s chief executive officer, Brian Mueller, in brief remarks to about 200 people assembled inside the Arena for the short ceremony. At least a few online students, on campus for the week’s convocation and Commencement festivities, were in attendance. “God has blessed us with this building,” Mueller said. “It’s His building. Through the ages, He has wanted His people to remember that He was their God and they were His people. So we’re here to say thank you.”
