GCU’s Lindsay Fernandez Competes for Miss Arizona USA

A funny thing happened to GCU student Lindsay Fernandez on her way to winning the crown of Fiesta Bowl Queen last year.
She liked it. “I’m not the typical titleholder,” says Fernandez, 23, a commuter student from Peoria who is majoring in health-care administration and nursing. She was the first student from GCU to ever make the finals of the Fiesta Bowl competition.

Rec Center Kicks Off New Year in Chaotic Style

Dozens of students descended on the Student Recreation Center at the end of the first day of fall classes to take part in an introduction to the facility, staged by Howard and members of his training staff.

‘Lopes Department Growing in Numbers

GCU’s Lopes Department celebrated its one-year anniversary this week, complete with birthday cake at the Canyon Café for the team of 50 student workers and two managers. The department, which pre-evaluates transcripts for prospective students, began with 18 workers last August and continues to grow in step with the University.

GCU Names Tim Griffin New Dean of Students

One year into his role as the GCU’s campus pastor, Tim Griffin is taking on an even larger role. In his own words, he is “drinking from the fire hose.” In July, GCU administration promoted Griffin to vice president of student services and dean of students. He will continue in his responsibilities as campus pastor, but he also will oversee the offices of Student Life and Spiritual Life, Career Services and Event Services.

GCU’s Class of 2011 Shares Stadium Stage

Grand Canyon University gave a rousing sendoff Friday afternoon to the Class of 2011 and to Chase Field in downtown Phoenix, in the final Commencement to be held at the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the opening of the 5,000-seat Arena in September, Commencement will be on campus next spring. An estimated 2,200 degree candidates participated Friday in the ceremony at the baseball stadium, which hosted GCU for the third consecutive year. The University conferred more than 8,000 degrees, and those included the first members of its College of Doctoral Studies.
