1970s
Sharon Tiknis,
B.A. in Behavioral
Science, ’79,
was
appointed senior
vice president
of business development for
The Alford Group, an Illinois-
based national consulting firm.
Tiknis has more than 35 years
of nonprofit management
experience and is a member of
Alford’s executive team.
1980s
Eddie Bonine,
B.S. in Physical
Education, ’87,
is
executive director
of the Nevada
Interscholastic Activities
Association and recently was
approved by the National
Federation of State High School
Associations to serve on its board
of directors.
1990s
Larry Ross, B.A. in
Communications,
’90,
is founder and
executive director
of Omega Youth
Leadership Academy, a Phoenix
nonprofit organization that
provides youth development
across the country. Ross recently
won the Hon Kachina Volunteer
Award, which recognizes
outstanding Arizona volunteers.
JimMostofo, B.A.
in History, ’91,
is an
assistant professor
in the GCU College
of Education. Last
spring, Mostofo volunteered for
two months as an English teacher
at two universities in Medellin,
Colombia. He hopes to return to
teach more effective classroom
methods to instructors there.
Dr. Melanie Logue,
B.S. in Nursing, ’93,
is program chair
of GCU’s Doctor of
Nursing Practice
in the College of Nursing and
Health Care Professions. Logue
recently was inducted as a Fellow
of the American Association of
Nurse Practitioners as an expert
clinician and patient advocate in
health information technologies
and Medicaid extension, and for
her service and championing of
the profession.
Lori Horn
Bustamante, B.S.
inHistory, ’94,
was
appointed to the
Maricopa County
Superior Court by Gov. Jan Brewer.
Bustamantewas a deputy county
attorney inMaricopa County and
a commissioner for theMaricopa
County Superior Court.
Frank BalkcomSr.,
B.S. in Public Safety
Administration,
’98,
is chief of
police in Page,
Ariz. A former lieutenant with
the Glendale (Ariz.) Police
Department, Balkcom had a 30-
year career as a reservist in the
Marine Corps and is a veteran of
Operations Desert Storm, Desert
Shield and Iraqi Freedom.
2000s
Kevin Arndt,
B.S. in Athletic
Training, ’00,
has
been teaching for 13
years, eight of which
were abroad. Arndt currently
teaches secondary mathematics
at The International School of
Azerbaijan in Baku.
Adrianne
Salas, M.A. in
Teaching, ’01,
is
superintendent of
Alamogordo (N.M.)
Public Schools. A former assistant
superintendent and executive
director of schools, Salas has
been with the district for 23 years,
starting as a volunteer when her
children were young.
Wayne Voorhees,
M.A. in Teaching,
’02,
coaches
football and teaches
physical education
at Legacy High School in
Broomfield, Colo. Voorhees is one
of 10 coaches to be recognized
this fall as a Denver Broncos NFL
High School Coach of the Week.
Jared Small, M.A.
in Teaching, ’03,
is principal at
Clarke N. Johnsen
Junior High
School in Tooele, Utah, where
he was nominated as the Tooele
County School District’s 2014
Administrator of the Year for his
leadership skills and the school’s
positive academic record.
Michael Bird, M.Ed.
in Curriculum
and Instruction:
Technology, ’06,
was named a
teacher of the year for 2014-15 in
the Poway (Calif.) Unified School
District. Bird teaches geoscience
and physics and coaches
