Black Student Union honors King with health panel

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an advocate for humanity who fought for the civil liberty of all people – and that includes their health and wellness.

In advance of Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Grand Canyon University’s Black Student Union hosted a virtual panel discussion, “I Have a Dream for a Healthier and Happier You and Me,” on Jan. 11.

Dr. Hope Ijaola

The discussion explored who is most at risk from the virus that causes COVID-19 and the pre-existing conditions and social factors that cause an increase in positive cases, including a lack of access to medical care and lack of trust in the science provided by medical professionals.

Dr. Hope Ijaola, a physician who specializes in internal medicine in Gilbert, said self-care is important.

“Oftentimes we have to do our part to look after ourselves and improve our underlying medical conditions by exercising, eating healthy and taking the necessary vitamins -- especially vitamin D,” she said.

It’s also important to boost mental health.

Dr. Edward L. James III

Dr. Edward L. James III, a licensed master social worker and marriage and family therapist, said it is important to consider counseling and other strategies to manage the daily task of work, family and other responsibilities.

Community care is also vital. Helping family, friends and neighbors will boost your own health, said Erica Glaze, a health educator and founder of Live Wellthy, LLC, an organization that specializes in maternal health.

She used the acronym B.R.A.I.N. to show how one advocates for care, whether you are an expectant mother or in other personal decisions: “When self-advocating, it’s important to practice considering the benefits, risks and alternatives, while using your intuition, and determining what’s next for you.”

The event was the second of three in the Black Student Union Speaker Series. The next is 6 p.m. Feb. 8, “Securing the Bag for Years to Come! Financial Planning & Wealth Panel Discussion.” A panel of entrepreneurs, financial analysts and brokers will share tips and resources for living in the present while effectively planning and preparing for the future.
