Almost every basketball path includes an early stop at a camp.
Some kids’ hoop dreams will start at Grand Canyon University, when the Lopes men’s basketball staff starts a series of Dan Majerle Boys Basketball Camps that put the fun in fundamentals.
The first individual youth camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through June 7 on campus. Kids, from ages 6 to 14, will utilize four campus facilities – GCU Arena, GCU Basketball Practice Facility, Lopes Performance Center and Antelope Gymnasium.
A second camp for the same age group will be held at the same campus locations June 18-21 with a third camp following June 25-28 with the same format at a different location – Scottsdale Community College.
GCU coaches and players will drill participants on basic offensive and defensive skills, give demonstrations, stage competitions, give individual instruction and organize a tournament of games.
“I always remember and appreciate the first camp that I attended as a kid and I want to pass that same valuable experience along to more kids who love the game like me,” said Majerle, entering his sixth year as GCU men’s basketball coach. “For me, going to a camp was instrumental in instilling the skills and the values that I have carried with me throughout my playing and coaching careers.”
Guest speakers will include current and former players from the Phoenix Suns and other NBA teams.
Campers will receive a Nike camp T-shirt, four catered lunches, a Junior Lopes Club membership, a 2018-19 season Camper Appreciation Game and GCU Ball Boy opportunities. Awards also will be given out to individuals and teams.
Each of the first two camps costs $250 per player. The cost of the June 25-28 camp at SCC is $260 by June 11 and $275 after June 11.
GCU employees receive a $25 discount. Anyone signing up for multiple camps or registering siblings will receive a $90 discount.
