One of the participants at commencement Friday knows the Grand Canyon University campus far better than most online students. Tatiana Parada lived on campus for her first two years but then moved to Los Angeles to get married. But she still completed her degree and raves about both the traditional and the online programs.

Desert plant research presented

GCU News Bureau A team of GCU Research and Design Program students working under College of Science, Engineering and Technology professor Dr. Ramesh Velupillaimani and a student of Dr. Karen Denzler from the Center for Antimicrobial Products recently presented their research findings on antimicrobial products from desert plants. The presentation was made April 21 at the 57th annual meeting of the Arizona/Southern Nevada Branch of the American Society for Microbiology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It was organized in conjunction with the Arizona/Nevada Academy of Sciences annual meeting. Students who presented included Sonia Molina, Karla Villegas, Nicolas J. Among the graduates Thursday night at Grand Canyon University spring commencement was Bianca Boling, one of the top players on the softball team but, even more important, a top performer in the Honors College. Her uncommon goal: She wants to become a forensic psychologist and study the behavior of serial killers and rapists.

Graduates honor beloved biochemistry professor

Dr. Tiffany Mealman was always thinking of her students. But at commencement on Thursday, her students were thinking of her. Recent graduates of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology spent a few minutes after commencement taking a photograph to send to the Mealman family — to show them how much the GCU biochemistry professor, who died of cancer earlier this year, meant to them.

Worship Arts graduates to a new level — in unison

The first major graduating class from the Center for Worship Arts was celebrated in the afternoon commencement session Thursday, and leading the way — as she has done so often — was Desiree Aguilar, who was the student speaker for a ceremony that included the College of Nursing and Health Care Professions and the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. She told of how she came to GCU after a serious illness and then was able to produce a song that reached No. 1 in the indie charts — all because she said yes to God.

Students have designs on art at Portfolio Showcase

The recent 2018 GCU Design Students’ Senior Portfolio Showcase featured everything from shoes decorated in a GCU-student-made graphic design to animation shorts and logos designed for businesses. More than 55 senior design students featured their work at the event.
