Passing of Bishop Alexis Thomas mourned at GCU

Bishop Alexis Thomas, a renowned and beloved senior pastor of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix and Gilbert, who had a wide-sweeping influence in Arizona, died Jan. 18 at age 50. One of his five sons, Micah, is a junior studying business administration in the Colangelo College of Business. Viewing and services are Sunday and Monday.

GCU News Bureau President Brian Mueller received a “Champion for Children” award for Grand Canyon University’s spirit of collaboration with the Back to School Clothing Drive, which annually distributes new school clothes, shoes, backpacks and supplies to 5,000 Title I elementary students in a weeklong event on campus. Dr. Antoinette Farmer, Honors College Dean and Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness, accepted the award on Mueller’s behalf. Dr. Jim Rice, a member of GCU’s Board of Directors and Hall of Fame, also received an award for his dedication to the clothing drive.

GCU flexing a new health initiative

GCU is flexing its latest recognition as an Exercise is Medicine campus. What that means is that, in addition to the typical questions at the health clinic, students will be asked about their exercise habits and may get a prescription for exercise. The idea is to improve the health of students on college campuses.
