GCU’s cybersecurity students placed fifth in their first National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition invitational of the 2018 season. They recently competed against 21 schools from California, Arizona and Nevada. The competition is sponsored by the government and Raytheon. It is focused on the operational task of assuming administrative and protective duties for an existing “commercial” network. Teams are scored on their ability to detect and respond to outside threats; maintain existing services, such as mail servers and web servers; respond to business requests, such as the addition or removal of additional services; and balance security needs against business needs. Assistant Professor Al Kelly said, “This is a remarkable feat for a brand new cybersecurity program and team at GCU.” The qualifier for the 2018 NCCDC season will be Jan. 27 with the actual competition slated for March.
