Higher Learning Commission reaffirms GCU's accreditation

The Higher Learning Commission has reaffirmed GCU's accreditation after a comprehensive review.

GCU Press Release

Grand Canyon University's accreditation has been reaffirmed by the Higher Learning Commission after a comprehensive review of the institution's academic offerings, governance and administration, mission, finances and resources.

GCU demonstrated that it met all core components during an HLC site visit on Nov. 14-16, and the accreditation was reaffirmed by the HLC's Institutional Actions Council at its meeting on Feb. 28, with no requirements for any monitoring or interim reports. The comprehensive review occurs every 10 years, along with a mid-term report in Year 4.

"We appreciate the HLC peer-review team's diligence and thoughtfulness during their site visit," said Brian Mueller, president of GCU. "They were impressed with the faculty, students, staff, physical campus and technology GCU uses to support the education of all students. Reaccreditation confirms the University is meeting recognized standards in higher education as we continue to maintain and improve the institutional performance that GCU is known for, particularly as it relates to student support services, academic integrity and financial transparency."

In addition to continued accreditation, GCU also received HLC approval to offer two additional doctoral programs:

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision
  • Doctor of Education in Teaching and Learning
  • The College of Doctoral Studies hopes to start offering the new programs in late summer 2017.

GCU offers more than 220 academic programs in its nine colleges. Its ground campus enrollment has grown to nearly 17,500 students, while its online campus of mostly working adult students has reached 65,000 students.

"The demand of families seeking high-quality, private Christian education that is affordable shows no limits," Mueller said. "HLC's reaccreditation is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and staff who ensure that, as we grow, we continue to set high standards throughout this process."

In addition to the HLC accreditation, GCU:

  • Recently received the maximum 10-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
  • Has successfully completed every stage of the four-year transition to NCAA Division I athletics and is awaiting final approval this summer
  • Completed a Veterans Administration audit with no findings
  • And has been granted associate membership of the Association of Theological Schools as it completes the process for full accreditation***

Bible Verse

Jesus continued His message, saying, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." (John 4:23-24)
