Beach social brings Lope life to Cali freshmen

Nearly 100 incoming Grand Canyon University students had the opportunity to meet other fellow Lopes and get a taste of GCU life before moving to campus in the fall during a July beach nurturing event in Los Angeles.

GCU hosts Southern California beach event for incoming freshmen

Photos by Darryl Webb GCU Today Magazine Nearly 100 incoming Grand Canyon University students from Southern California got a taste of campus life in July during the University’s second-annual beach nurturing event in Los Angeles. Students met and socialized with future classmates while playing beach-themed games, talked with counselors and loaded up on GCU swag.

Spotlight on Igor Kutovoy, Class of 1999

By Rick Vacek GCU Today Magazine When Igor Kutovoy was a GCU student in the late 1990s, he was struck by the way “we were always looking to make a difference, both inside the University and out in the community.” With that spirit firmly rooted in his mind, Kutovoy returned to his native Ukraine to make a difference there, using his passion for agriculture and his country. The 1999 graduate (BBA in Finance) is manager of the Ukrainian office of John Deere, an American manufacturer of farm machinery. Kutovoy, 37, also consults for the government, is on the board of directors of Ukraine’s largest agricultural university and helps support an orphanage for mentally challenged children. Not many people outside Ukraine know that it is making drastic reforms despite the threat of war with Russia. Kutovoy said the country is on track for one of the top farm yields in its history, and in Kiev an almost entirely new police force —with new uniforms, cars and higher salaries — recently was sworn in, sweeping away all but a fraction of a unit beset by corruption. “There’s a lot of optimism,” he said.
