A crowd of nearly 100 well-wishers turned out Wednesday afternoon to see the GCU women’s basketball team off to Pomona, Calif., for the NCAA Division II West Regional. “This is sweet!” said Antelope freshman Jenna Pearson, impressed by the support as the team boarded the bus outside Antelope Gym. Accounting professor Cathryn Meegan and instructor Sarah Zelhart held a sign, “We’re accounting on you! ’Lopes up!” Members of the men’s basketball, men’s volleyball and softball teams also were on hand.

Winning Is the Point for GCU’s Roz Nelson

There’s a one-word job description for a point guard in basketball — win — and the record shows that no one at GCU has done it better than Rosalyn Nelson, gimpy knee and all. Nelson’s four-year resumé says plenty about her. She has scored 1,534 points and passed out 525 assists. This season, she’s averaging 12.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. She was the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2007-08, and she has made the all-conference team three times.

Over the weekend the GCU women’s basketball team clinched it’s fourth PacWest Championship in five years and claimed a spot in the Division II West Regional. The team will face off with Seattle Pacific University in Pomona, Calif. on Friday, March 11, and you could be there. Get on the bus to support the Lady ‘Lopes! All GCU Students are Welcome! National Stage Awaits Top Antelope Athletes

Next weekend has been circled in red for weeks and months on the calendars of GCU athletes in wrestling, swimming, and track and field. National qualifiers will head off to the NCAA Division II championships, in far-off places such as Kearney, Neb., San Antonio and Albuquerque. It doesn’t get any bigger than this, and in the final preparations there is no room for doubt, only determination.

Slideshow: Antelope Basketball Hits Big with Halftime Show

With the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, the Sol Patrol and artist Erik Wahl performing, halftime at last Saturday’s men’s basketball game was as good as it gets. Wahl’s on-the-fly portrait of Michael Jordan was won by Emilia Smith, who works at Casa de Suenos, an independent-living facility for at-risk youth. The artwork will be displayed at Casa’s group home in central Phoenix.

Seniors Expect Big Things From ’Lopes Baseball

Seniors Tyler Bair and Colin Courtland have a feeling that a breakthrough season is on the way for GCU’s baseball team. The Antelopes are ranked ninth in the West Region and have been picked to finish second among five teams in the Pacific West Conference, behind Dixie State College. They’ll begin to see what they’ve got at 4 p.m. today and Thursday against visiting Arizona Christian University (formerly Southwestern College).

Wilcox, GCU Wrestlers Aiming Even Higher

GCU wrestler Todd Wilcox has a record of 10-2 this season, and he says the 2 matters more to him than the 10. “You definitely learn more from your losses,” he says, “and it’s better to lose now than in the postseason. I want the tough competition.”
