The win comes as the ‘Lopes started the season 0-3 with losses to Western Washington, San Francisco State and Kentucky Wesleyan – two of which, Western Washington and Kentucky Wesleyan, won their conference championships last season – at Disney’s Division II Tip-Off West Coast Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Cal State Dominguez Hills also captured its conference title last season.

“I think it’s just a real sign of how we’ve grown in the last two weeks, and to me that’s what really excites me,” says Head Coach Russ Pennell. “And, of course, capping it off with a win is the icing on the cake. I liked our heart and our effort tonight.”

Sophomore guard Nick Witherill made 8 of 9 field goals, including 6 of 6 three-pointers, and finished with 22 points. He also made a key play in the second half, with the ‘Lopes leading 47-39, when he took a charge on a 2-on-1 break. It swung the momentum back on GCU’s side, and the Weber State Connection – guard T.J. Benson and forward Marco Ramos - made sure it stayed that way. The two seniors, who played together at Weber State before transferring to GCU, turned an eight-point lead into a 17-point one.

GCU shot 51 percent (21 of 41) for the game, including 50 percent (12 of 24) from behind the three-point arc. Benson and Ramos had 10 points apiece.

Get your tickets now as the GCU men’s and women’s basketball teams host their first regular season home games. The Lady ‘Lopes face the University of California, San Diego, at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon (Nov. 21). Then the men host California Baptist University Tuesday, November 24, at 7 p.m.

Faculty and staff tickets are available on campus in building 8.

Special pre- and post-game activities are planned for each game.

GCU is collecting toys for three different ministries this Christmas season, including: Jump Start, a ministry to the poor in the East Valley; the Navajo Indian Reservation; and a special Christmas outreach event we will host on campus Dec. 13. Our goal is to collect 450 toys this year. Toy collection boxes are available around campus, as well as the Peoria and Tempe buildings.

GCU’s Annual Turkey Drive is in its final week stretch, with frozen turkeys being collected through Wednesday, Nov. 25. The Office of Spiritual Life requests that turkeys be brought to their office as soon as possible. With a goal of 200 turkeys, the donated birds will provide Christmas dinners on the Navajo Indian reservation.

You may also join a weekend mission trip Dec. 4-7 to deliver toys and turkeys to the Navajo Indian reservation. Cost is $150. For more information contact University Pastor Mik Milem at ext. 639-6750.

Monday – International foods served in the Student Union from recipes submitted by our international students.

Tuesday – International soccer game presented at the GCU main soccer field at 4 p.m.

Wednesday – The Cultures of GCU will present in the Student Union from noon to 2 p.m., featuring information about various cultures, as well as GCU missions and study abroad programs.

Thursday – The Canyon Café will host European Night from 6 to 8 p.m. with food, music, dances and games presented by international students from Europe.

Friday – At 7 p.m. in Ethington Theatre, international students will discuss their experiences as refugees and present a film about Rwanda.

Dr. Rice received the award in honor of his dedication to students in his district, which ranks high academically in Arizona, despite a large percentage of disadvantaged students.  The district partners with doctors and dentists to assure the poorest students have access to care. Rice also is a leading supporter of the district’s scholarship fund, which has awarded more than 1,000 scholarships.

Freshman forward Kyle Ciliento, the PacWest’s leader in goals, goals per game, points, points per game, shots and shots per game, scored his 21st, 22nd and 23rd goals of the season. Senior defender/midfielder Jesse Baker, who assisted on Ciliento’s first goal and was honored at halftime along with defender/midfielder Joshua Ademosu headed in a corner kick from junior midfielder Johnny Vieira and freshman midfielder/forward A.J. Jaramillo scored on a deflection.

Junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio recorded his GCU single-season record 12th shutout of the season. He also broke the school record for lowest goals-against average in a season.

The ‘Lopes finished the regular season 14-3-3, 11-1-2 in the Pacific West Conference.
