The GCU men’s basketball team won its first game of the regular season in a 67-57 defeat of Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.

The win comes as the ‘Lopes started the season 0-3 with losses to Western Washington, San Francisco State and Kentucky Wesleyan – two of which, Western Washington and Kentucky Wesleyan, won their conference championships last season – at Disney’s Division II Tip-Off West Coast Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Cal State Dominguez Hills also captured its conference title last season.

“I think it’s just a real sign of how we’ve grown in the last two weeks, and to me that’s what really excites me,” says Head Coach Russ Pennell. “And, of course, capping it off with a win is the icing on the cake. I liked our heart and our effort tonight.”

Sophomore guard Nick Witherill made 8 of 9 field goals, including 6 of 6 three-pointers, and finished with 22 points. He also made a key play in the second half, with the ‘Lopes leading 47-39, when he took a charge on a 2-on-1 break. It swung the momentum back on GCU’s side, and the Weber State Connection – guard T.J. Benson and forward Marco Ramos - made sure it stayed that way. The two seniors, who played together at Weber State before transferring to GCU, turned an eight-point lead into a 17-point one.

GCU shot 51 percent (21 of 41) for the game, including 50 percent (12 of 24) from behind the three-point arc. Benson and Ramos had 10 points apiece.

GCU was a “lane sponsor” for this year’s Junior Achievement Bowl-a-Thon: Rumble in the Alley. The November 14 event matched staff teams from Arizona universities in a bowling competition, complete with food, drink, music and prizes. The teams collect sponsorships with the goal of raising enough money to support three children per bowler. All proceeds benefit Junior Achievement’s work with educating Arizona’s children about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The University’s sponsorship will help Junior Achievement reach an additional 15 students next year.

Dr. Jim Rice, a University Board Member, Alumni and Alhambra Elementary School District Superintendent, was honored with the Individual Leadership Award recently at the annual Western Maricopa Coalition (Westmarc) Awards in Phoenix. The “Best of the West” awards recognize individuals and organizations that provide outstanding contributions to the image, lifestyle and economic development of the West Valley in Phoenix.

Dr. Rice received the award in honor of his dedication to students in his district, which ranks high academically in Arizona, despite a large percentage of disadvantaged students. The district partners with doctors and dentists to assure the poorest students have access to care. Rice also is a leading supporter of the district’s scholarship fund, which has awarded more than 1,000 scholarships.

Trader! Trader! The Junior Achievement Stock Market Exchange overtook the Arizona Biltmore on Wednesday 10/28 and invited professionals and students to show off their trading abilities and compete in a two hour mock stock market exchange challenge. Business Club members, Mark Hardy, Joe Bower and Robert Mohle represented GCU and competed against teams including U of A, ASU and even Charles Schwab and Pricewater House Cooper. During the two hour challenge, teams participated bought and sold mock stocks, in hopes of ending the competition with the most money and GCU came out on top by earning first place in the college category!

“It was exhilarating; here we were each with a different background and knowledge combining our skills together to compete against and beat other college teams and working professionals in a real-time stock market environment. We were shouting, cheering, and watching intently just like those on The Street!” Mark Hardy, Senior/Accounting
