GCU Student Worker of the Month: Cheryl Yap

Cheryl Yap works quickly and efficiently.

Yap earned the Student Worker of the Month award for October after only four months at her current position. The junior accounting major serves as data support assistant at Grand Canyon University's Office Center at 27th Avenue and Camelback Road. She was nominated for her ability to effectively manage system access and passwords for all University accounting programs such as Kronos and iPay.

Yap, 21, a native of Malaysia, arrived in Arizona in 2010 through a university student exchange program. Although she knew little English when she first arrived, she became fluent after a two-month English language learning program at Arizona State University. She earned her associate's degree from Glendale Community College in 2012 and transferred to GCU last January. Yap began working for the University in June and quickly garnered the admiration of her coworkers.

The award came as a surprise to her.

“I never thought I would receive this (award) so soon,” Yap said. “I haven’t even been here that long.”

Evan Fager, GCU's AIS manager and HRIS project manager, nominated Yap for the award earlier this month. Fager said he appreciated her attention to detail and ability to exceed expectations without supervision while continuing to excel in the classroom with a 4.0 grade-point average.

“Cheryl exemplifies the finest qualities we look for in students at GCU,” Fager wrote in the Student Worker of the Month nomination form. “She should be extremely proud of her work ethic and commitment to scholarly advancement that she has been able to achieve.”
