Tech Support Reports Pop-Up Credit Report Phishing Scam

Grand Canyon University has learned of a marketing scam. The scam is targeting financial institution websites and .edu websites; it claims that your privacy has been breached at Epsilon Corporation.

A virus on your computer detects you are logging into GCU.edu (or other financial and/or academic institutions’ websites) and a pop-up window, designed to look as though it is from the bank, directs you to a non-American Savings Bank website. It asks you to click through to a site purporting to offer a “free” credit report. An image of the fraudulent pop-up window is below.

If you encounter this pop-up, do not click on any link that may be contained or enter any personal information. This is a phishing scam.

What Should You Do If You See This Pop-Up?

  1. Report this to GCU Tech Support immediately!
  2. Your computer likely has a virus or malware that needs to be removed. Immediately update and run your virus-scanning software and anti-malware software.
  3. If you followed the link and gave a credit card number and other personal information, immediately call your credit card company and disable that card. Also watch your credit activity closely for the next several months to detect any identity-theft activity.

Please note that this scam is not related to or associated with GCU and GCU servers are not sending this message.

Grand Canyon University is committed to ensuring that our customers’ personal information is protected and safeguarded. If you have questions or if we can be of assistance please contact Technical Support.

Bible Verse

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)
